I am fascinated and intrigued by what R Buckminster Fuller, often acknowledged as Planet Earth's Friendly Genius, and also inventor of the geodesic dome, had asserted here, for he talked more or less like Dr Maxwell Maltz, especially when it comes to exploiting our You-niqueness!

"You do not belong to you. You belong to the universe. The significance of you will remain forever obscure to you, but you may assume you are fulfilling your significance if you apply yourself to converting all you experience to the highest advantage of others.

Make the world work, for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation, without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone. Nature is a totally efficient, self-regenerating system. If we discover the laws that govern this system and live synergistically within them, sustainability will follow and humankind will be a success.
Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren't any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn't be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life's challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.'

Continuing my intellectual journey on building and exanding my earlier lessons on opportunity recognition from Dr Maxwell Maltz, starting in the late seventies and traversing throughout the ensuing years of riding on the shoulders of giants before me, here's my next piece of advice:

VIEWPOINT STRATEGY  ~ SEEING THROUGH:
Basically, this is exercising perseverance and persistence in the face of adversity.
Many of us tend to give up easily when we fail in something.
For example, in school, when we got an F in the Chinese Language test or flunked the O Levels, we thought it was the end of the road.
There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
When we made a horrendous mistake in some parts of our life, we just wanted to give up.
According to numerous motivational experts, there are no such things as mistakes, only learning experiences. But please, don't make the same mistake twice!

In fact, I like what R Buckminster Fuller, recognised as Planet Earth's Friendly Genius & inventor of the geodesic dome, once said:

"There are no failed experiments; only unexpected results!"

If Thomas Edison had not persevered and persisted in experimenting with some ten thousand filament alternatives, we would probably still be using large candles today!
As a matter of fact, Thomas Edision exemplied this "seeing through" phenonemon extremely well, as his wife once observed that, "Mr. Edison worked endlessly on a problem, using the method of elimination. If a person asked him whether he were discouraged because so many attempts proved unavailing, he would say:

'No, I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.''

[Thanks to community member Chad Alexander for highlighting this fact to me!]
Drawing on my own personal experiences while having navigated the Highway of Life for more than seven decades, I like to sum up the best approach, at least from the standpoint of goal setting and goal achieving:
  • to have an umbrella of long-range strategic goals, covering all the major life dimensions,
  • followed by a game plan, with a porfolio of specific, prioritised and executable tasks, that you need to accomplish daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and even annually, with your end in mind.
Naturally, you stay focused on your strategic goals, but remain adaptable and flexible in your tactical execution.
At the end of the day:

The ultimate fire test comes from your sweat equity in following up and following through what you have set out to do in your game plan.

This is how your "seeing through" works!
That's all folks for today! Stay tuned for my next Viewpoint Strategy!

My favourite definition of wealth comes from author-architect-inventor-educator-futurist R Buckminster Fuller, or Bucky as he was often affectionately known:

"WEALTH IS THE PRODUCT OF ENERGY TIMES INTELLIGENCE: ENERGY TURNED INTO ARTIFACTS THAT ADVANTAGE HUMAN LIFE."

Not surprising with this elegant quote from Michio Kaku, as other brilliant minds like R Buckminster Fuller and Sir Ken Robinson had previously shared his candid sentiment.

I just read about a question posed to seek meaning about what R Buckminster Fuller, often acknowledged as Planet Earth's Friendly Genius, said about "there are no straight lines in the universe."

My personal interpretation, while taking the liberty to transpose it to the personal setting:
A lot of people think the path to success is a straight line, but it is not. It has got numerous turns and curves, and we just got to go with the ebbs and flow of it all, as exemplified by entrepreneurs and other professionals illustrated in the following infographics, Lost in Life.

This is very interesting, for it resonates with what I have had learned from architect-inventor-educator-author-futurist R Buckminster Fuller, often acknowledged as Planet Earth's Friendly Genius, back in the early nineties, when his magnum opus Critical Path talked about the Precessional Effect using the Honey Bee as an analogy.

As he put it so eloquently:

"... Seemingly inadvertently, the honey-bee goes about his business of gathering honey.
Precessionally, at ninety degree’s to his body and his flight path, his legs gather pollen from one flower and “accidentally “ take this pollen to the next flower, resulting in cross pollination.
The outcome of this seemingly inadvertent accidental activity is that the bee contributes enormously to life on earth.
Of the 100 crop species that provide 90 per cent of the world’s food, over 70 are pollinated by bees..."!

Bravissimo!

THERE ARE NO PASSENGERS ON SPACESHIP EARTH, WE ARE ALL CREW!

Think about it!

In fact, this resonates with what planet Earth's friendly genius, R Buckminster Fuller or better known to folks affectionately as Bucky, said, when I first read about him in the early nineties:

“We are not going to be able to operate our Spaceship Earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. It has to be everybody or nobody.”

A WISE QUOTE FOR MONDAY MORNING

"When individuals join in a cooperative venture, the power generated far exceeds what they could have accomplished acting individually."

~ R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983), architect, engineer, inventor, philosopher, poet & mathematician, who created the Geodesic Dome, among other patented artefacts; also coined the terms "Spaceship Earth" & "One-Town World" to reflect his self-less dedication "to make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological damage or disadvantage to anyone";

da vincian PRINCIPLES: PERSONAL PERSPECTIVES III

[continue from the Last Post.]

"Everything is connected to everything else."

To be frank, the first time I had encountered this profound statement from Leonardo da vinci, that was way back into the late seventies or maybe the early eighties, I sort of knew it only intellectually, but did not truly understand it.

That's to say, to paraphrase personal transformation guru Harry Palmer, I had acquired only the "word experience", but not yet the "world experience".

It was probably only towards the end of the eighties that I had a good grasp of its true meaning, especially after I had embarked on a journey to explore learning & creativity as lifelong pursuits, followed by my small entrepreneurial ventures during the early nineties (bookstore, newsletter publishing, & consulting).

Around that time, I had acquired the fascinating book, 'Connections' [followed later by 'The Pinball Effect'] as well as the related wonderful video productions, by scholar & documentary producer James Burke.

He had brilliantly traced the course of many technological innovations from ancient times to the present. In fact, he looked in particular at 8 of them, which maybe most influential in structuring our futures:

- the computer;
- the production line;
- telecommunications;
- the airplane;
- the atomic bomb,
- plastics;
- the guided rocket;
- television;

According to him, each of the 8 was part of a family of similar devices, & was the result of a sequence of closely related events extending from the ancient world until the present day.

In a nut shell, about 12,000 years of history had shown that every person, circumstance, event or invention related in some way to every other.

With my own personal exploration of the field of creativity & innovation, first as a student, then researcher, & finally as a strategy consultant, working with real-world clients, my understanding & knowledge of the foregoing statement went up a couple of notches.

I like to use the following apt quotes to exemplify:

"The crux of creativity resides in the ability to manufacture variations on a theme. If you look at the history of science, for instance, you will see that every idea is built upon a thousand related ideas. Careful analysis leads one to see that what we choose to call a new theme is itself always some sort of variation, on a deeper level, of previous themes."

~ Douglas Hofstadter, quoted in 'Essence of Creativity' by Steven Kim;

"The essence of creation - in all endeavours - is chance connections between ideas & facts that were previously segregated. Entrepreneurship is the direct by-product of chance, of convoluted connections among ideas, needs & people."

~ Tom Peters, 'Liberation Management';

Around the same time, as part of my strategy consulting, in conjunction with my small bookstore, aptly called 'The Brain Resource', I had also indulged in training development & coaching both professionals, managers & entrepreneurs as well as school going kids & teens.

In building up my reference & coaching resources, especially for the kids, I had stumbled upon a wonderful picture book, among many others, by Dr Seuss under his pseudonym, Rosetta Stone: 'Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo!'.

In a nut shell: A little bug sneezed & each consequence led to a bigger one, creating in the end total chaos in town, & all because a little bug went ka-choo!

It was certainly a fun way to introduce to the kids the idea that even our smallest actions could have important consequences.

Nonetheless, for me, it was also a brilliant encapsulation of Chaos Theory, which beautifully illustrated the fact that a small event could trigger larger unforeseen events.

Wow! Basically everything is somehow connected to everything else!

Interestingly, I had also meanwhile stumbled upon the Dymaxion Map, or better known as the Fuller Projection, from R Buckminister Fuller, or Bucky as he was affectionately known. He was the man who had created the Geodesic Dome.

Imagine my real shock of realising what I had learned earlier in school, especially with the most widely used Mercator Map, was wrong.

In the Mercator Map, Greenland was shown 3 times its normal size; Antarctica was splayed across the full length of the bottom of the map as a huge long piece of land.

That's to say, the map was badly distorted.

In the case of the Fuller Projection, patented in 1946, the map arrangement puts the North Pole as the centre, thus showing a contiguous land mass & retaining most of the relative proportional integrity of the global map.

That's to say, the map has no or minimal distortion.

In reality, Bucky saw all people on planet earth eventually becoming a one-town world or one-world island in a one-world ocean.

I then knew exactly why Bucky had designated our planet earth as Spaceship Earth. We are all in it together as crew members.

In other words, we are all connected.

Come to think of it, at a deeper level, whenever we find or learn something new in our environment for the first time in our life, doesn't our brain goes into a quick search mode at lightning speed to zip through our entire lifetime inventory of memory traces in order to create a match, so to speak, as if everything in life we have gone through is connected or resonated in some way?
