I find Dr Maltz's astute observation very interesting, and that it has wider applications.
In the field of NLP or neuro-linguistics programming, we call it pattern interrupt, which is a way to change a person's state or strategy.
Using a pattern interrupt allows us to step out of bad habits, change our behaviour, or even influence another person's behaviour.
It can be a physical or verbal change that disrupts some unwanted behaviour.
New perspectives are also a valuable tool for disrupting patterns.

The late creativity maestro Dr Edward de Bono had often used, as an integral part of his lateral thinking repertoire, such an approach to sustain a culture of innovative thinking in organisations.
